Cooling units, Thermoelectric Cooler

Cooling units keep the enclosure internal temperature at a constant level, which is independent of the ambient temperature. The air routing meets individual requirements. Two separate circuits prevent the ingress of dust into the enclosure.

F-Gas Regulation (EU): Rittal relies on R-1234yf

The F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573 significantly tightens the requirements for refrigerants. Starting in 2027, a GWP limit of < 150 will apply to cooling units and chillers up to 12 kW.

Rittal is already converting its Blue e+ and Blue e+ S cooling unit and chiller platforms to the future-proof refrigerant R-1234yf. This ensures that you, as an operator, meet the requirements of the F-Gas Regulation well in advance of the ban effective January 1, 2027: EU-compliant, safe, and sustainable.

Rittal Product Portfolio: F-Gas compliant & future-proof

GWP = 0.5

  • Fully F-Gas-compliant portfolio for industrial and IT cooling
  • Blue e+ S cooling units 0.3 – 1.0 kW
  • Blue e+ cooling units 1.6 – 5.5 kW
  • Blue e+ chillers 1.5 – 7.0 kW
  • New article numbers for all climate control units with R-1234yf
  • Availability:
Cooling units: in stock, Chillers: Q2 2026

Exceptions to the GWP limit

  • If safety requirements at the installation site do not permit the use of R-1234yf, the F-Gas Regulation allows for an exemption permitting the use of refrigerants with a GWP of up to 750.
  • For this purpose, Rittal continues to offer product variants with R-513A (GWP = 631).

Tried and tested and safe: R-1234yf

R-1234yf is classified as A2L according to ASHRAE 34 / ISO 817: low toxicity and flame-retardant. Due to its high lower flammability limit of approximately 6.2 vol%, flammable mixtures are only possible under highly unlikely conditions. The refrigerant has also been in use for many years in millions of vehicle air conditioning systems and is recognized worldwide as proven and safe.

All Rittal cooling units with R-1234yf:

  • comply with EN/IEC 60335-2-40 and UL 60335-2-40
  • remain below the permissible refrigerant fill levels
  • require no additional safety measures such as leak sensors or forced ventilation

Tests by the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) confirm: There is no fire hazard under real operating conditions.

In a Nutshell: The F-Gas Regulation (EU)

Grandfathering and regulatory obligations

The provisions of the F-Gas Regulation apply exclusively to new equipment placed on the market – existing systems may continue to be operated and maintained as usual until 2032 using the refrigerants R134a, R410a, and R-513A. After that, a service and maintenance ban will take effect for systems using refrigerants with a GWP exceeding 750.

Important for manufacturers, importers, and exporters Anyone who imports or exports refrigerants or equipment containing F-gases must register on the European Union’s F-Gas Portal at.
