Over seventy years on from testing first-generation air defence missile systems in South Australia in 1953, BAE Systems has now grown to become Australia’s leading defence and security company. As specialists in air, maritime sustainment, and shipbuilding, BAE Systems provide critical support to the Australian Defence Force, alongside extensive cyber intelligence and advanced defence technology that protects both people and national security, while keeping critical information and infrastructure secure.
Problem
BAE Systems oversees a complex network of IT infrastructure, crucial for their diverse range of defence and security projects. The company recently embarked on a challenging initiative, aiming to install IT equipment in a mixed-use office space, necessitating the use of acoustically rated racks to maintain a conducive working environment.
The existing structure of the building presented a significant challenge, as the designated room for the IT equipment was not initially equipped to handle the specific needs of the project. The space required a comprehensive overhaul of its cooling systems to ensure the reliable operation of the IT equipment, a critical factor given the high-security nature of BAE Systems’ defence projects.
As the project progressed, it became evident that the racks used to house the IT equipment needed to adhere to stringent security standards, mirroring the sensitive nature of BAE Systems’ operations. This placed the company at a pivotal juncture, needing a solution that could seamlessly integrate into the existing office space while meeting the unique requirements of the defence project.
Key requirements included: enhanced security for IT equipment, minimised risk of downtime augmented reliability of IT equipment and elevated WHS standards within the office environment.
