The different types of server climate control and their areas of application
From Liquid Cooling Packages and Liquid Cooling Units that use air/water heat exchangers to ensure optimum server rack climate control through to small cooling units that ventilate individual IT racks, chillers that are used for server cooling in IT applications and roof-mounted cooling units for active individual rack cooling – Rittal offers a comprehensive portfolio of products for your server racks.
Our range also includes door and ceiling elements for aisle containment as well as numerous accessories for your server rack climate control.
A variety of Rittal server rack cooling options are available, with a maximum cooling output of up to 53 kilowatts.
If you would like to find out which server rack climate control solution is the right one for your particular application, we’ll be happy to offer you advice and support when it comes to selecting the appropriate IT cooling system.
FAQs about server rack climate control
Why do servers need to be cooled?
Servers need to be cooled because they generate a considerable amount of heat when operating. The heat produced by processors, hard drives and other electronic components can result in overheating if it is not dissipated. Overheating can impair the performance of hardware, shorten its service life and, in the worst-case scenario, lead to system failures or equipment damage. Cooling helps maintain the optimum operating temperature to ensure reliable performance and a long server service life.
How high can the temperature inside a server rack be allowed to get?
A server room should have a constant temperature of between 18 and a maximum of 27 °C. However, it should be noted that lower temperatures are often preferable in order to provide an additional safety margin and maximise the service life of components.
How cool does a server room need to be?
The temperature inside the server rack should be maintained at between 18 and 27 °C, with the optimum temperature ranging from 20 to 22 °C. This prevents servers from overheating and ensures stable running.
What are the benefits of server rack climate control?
Rittal climate control concepts for server cooling offer the following benefits:
- Extended service life for equipment, thanks to protection from overheating
- Increased reliability and reduced downtimes
- Efficient cooling, directly at the heat sources
- Enhanced performance of hardware under optimum conditions
- Protection from contaminants in the air and from dust
- Controlled humidity to prevent static electricity
- Minimised operating costs, thanks to energy-efficient systems
To sum up, server rack climate control plays a key role in maintaining the stable, reliable operation of IT systems, protects investments in hardware and reduces operating costs on a long-term basis.
