Low-GWP refrigerant – a simple adjustment to your climate control technology

Stricter legislation such as the F-gas Regulation means that industrial companies have now to play a key role in boosting climate protection. The aim is to reduce their carbon footprint. If companies are to remain competitive on global markets, swift action is called for. At Rittal, we completely understand this sense of urgency. This is why, step by step, we are already switching our entire range of climate control products over to the more environmentally friendly refrigerant R-513A.

Effortless refrigerant switchover and change with no extra effort or outlay

By us switching our refrigerant, we are ensuring that your production will not only continue to comply with the relevant legislation, but will also pave the way to a more sustainable future.

The entire Rittal core portfolio of cooling units in the Blue e+ and Blue e ranges is affected by this switch. What’s more, our Blue e+ and Blue e chillers are also gradually being switched over to refrigerant R-513A. The sole exception is our Blue e+ S cooling units an output rating ranging from 0.3 to 1.0 kW, since refrigerant R-513A is already used in these.

There is no extra outlay, effort, work or expense for you – neither with regard to new drawings nor changes to article part numbers. We aim to make this transition as simple and straightforward for you as possible, leaving you free to focus on your core business.

Good reasons to use refrigerant R-513A

lower global warming potential (GWP): Refrigerant R-513A has a much lower GWP value than refrigerant R134a. The GWP value for R134a was 1,430, whereas it is just 631 for R-513A. In the case of our chillers, the GWP value is as much as 70% (from 2,088 for R410a down to 631 for R-513A).

This means our products comply with the stringent requirements of the US market, where a GWP value of < 700 will apply to cooling units from 1 January 2025 and to chillers from 1 January 2026 (already in force in California and Washington from 1 January 2024). Also the regulations in Canada, applicable from 1 January 2025, for a GWP value of < 750 for chillers, are achieved with our product portfolio.

We aim to continue developing our energy-efficient, eco-friendly cooling solutions and to use refrigerants that meet all future global environmental protection requirements. You can therefore rest assured that you are in safe hands. Now and for years to come.

Important to know: The regulations apply to new units only – existing equipment can still be operated and maintained with refrigerants R134a/R410a until 2032. From then on, a maintenance and servicing ban will apply to equipment that uses refrigerants with a GWP value over 750.

The benefits for you

  • Futureproofing: You already comply with future legal requirements applicable in both Europe and the USA.
  • Sustainability: By using a refrigerant that is more environmentally friendly, you will lower the carbon footprint of your production.
  • Global market opportunities: With a GWP of less than 700, our range of climate control solutions allows unrestricted access to markets anywhere in the world.

Did you know that you need to register on the Union’s F-gas Portal (F-gas portal of the European Union) if you want to import and export refrigerants that contain F-gases?

We are there for you!
