A stainless steel enclosure delivers impressive robustness, durability and hygienic properties. These characteristics make it popular in many segments of industry, by providing reliable protection for sensitive electronics indoors. Material properties of stainless steel enclosures
Stainless steel is manufactured from steel with alloy additives. Stainless steel is often referred to as rustproof steel to highlight its positive properties, although this is an oversimplification. Nevertheless, this almost entirely rust-free material offers many benefits: Stainless steel enclosures are very temperature-resistant, weldable, hygienic and low-maintenance. The high proportion of chromium in the steel alloy forms a surface layer of chrome oxide which prevents rusting and also protects against water.
Special features of the chrome oxide layer in stainless steel enclosures
To effectively prevent corrosion in a stainless steel enclosure, the layer of chrome oxide on the surface must be intact. However, if this layer becomes damaged, it will start to “self-heal” as the damaged chrome reoxidises and rebuilds a protective layer. Admittedly, this only applies to small scratches. More extensive damage, dents, acids and environments containing chlorine may damage the coating to such an extent that it cannot self-heal.
Can water cause stainless steel to rust?
As we mentioned earlier, the term “rustproof steel” is not entirely accurate, as it may still rust and corrode in certain conditions. For example, if damage has been caused to the surface by other metals – e.g. when lifting the enclosure with a forklift ‒ and metal particles are left behind, they may oxidise. Metal particles may also be transmitted through the air and adhere to stainless steel surfaces, and rust can then form in conjunction with oxygen, humidity or water. This phenomenon is known as “flash rust” and can by caused by flying sparks containing metal particles, for example when machining a steel part with an angle grinder.
Stainless steel and the importance of cleaning
Regular cleaning can help prevent non-rustproof metal particles from being deposited on the stainless steel surface. Particles are less likely to adhere to smooth surfaces; furthermore, cleaning removes any residues already deposited.
Overview: Application areas for stainless steel enclosures
Stainless steel has become a popular material based on its physical properties. Stainless steel enclosures and cases are becoming increasingly widespread in the chemicals, foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals industries as well as in medical technology, to name just a few examples. Particularly in areas where hygiene is paramount, unhindered access for cleaning is vital. For such cases, Rittal offers enclosures and cases made from type 1.4301 rust-free stainless steel, also known as V2A stainless steel. This makes them resistant to humidity, water vapour and weak acids. Type 1.4404 stainless steel, also known as V4A stainless steel, is even more resistant to a range of factors such as salt and acid, and is therefore suitable for use in challenging environments. This stainless steel variant is, of course, also available from Rittal.
An alternative coating for your stainless steel enclosure.
In exceptionally adverse ambient conditions, such as salt-laden air, enclosures may be given an additional coating. Rittal’s proposed solution is a stainless steel enclosure with a clear spray-finish to retain the stainless steel look. Another option is a high-quality powder coating in your preferred colour.
