Direct Liquid Cooling in hyperscale data centres – Empowering AI
For hyperscalers, artificial intelligence is a key growth market. However, the rapid escalation in the performance of AI servers also poses a number of challenges. Increased performance densities mean higher heat loads, and therefore demand significantly more cooling output. Air cooling systems are being pushed to their limits. The solution? With direct liquid cooling, the cooling liquid passes directly over the chip, where most of the heat is generated.
A hyperscale infrastructure is designed for scalability, high availability and easy servicing. Rittal has designed a direct liquid cooling (DLC) portfolio tailored to the needs of hyperscalers. All solutions allow effortless integration into the existing IT infrastructure and are designed for maximum efficiency, so your IT systems can operate at maximum performance without consuming unnecessary energy.
Our liquid cooling portfolio
One mega watt!
The cooling output delivered by Rittal’s most powerful Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU) In-Row.
Our DLC portfolio offers four different solutions with cooling outputs ranging from 38 kW to 1 MW.
Liquid-to-air solutions:
-
38 kW: Rear Door HEx with Coolant Circulation Unit (CCU)
-
50 kW: Side Cooler with CCU
Our liquid-to-air solutions cool heat-generating components like the AI chip using a water/glycol mixture which is air-cooled via the rear door of the rack or by a side cooler. They are used in individual IT racks or in data centres with medium heat losses.
Liquid-to-liquid solutions:
-
150 kW: CDU In-Rack
-
1 MW: CDU In-Row
In our liquid-to-liquid solutions, the water/glycol mixture is cooled by the building’s own water supply. Liquid cooling removes significantly more heat than air cooling. Liquid-to-liquid solutions are used in data centres with a medium heat loss as well as in high-performance data centres.
Always available and OCP-compatible
Maximum operational reliability: The integral redundancy options included with Rittal Direct Liquid Cooling keep your systems permanently available. The hot-swap function allows you to replace critical components while the system is running; no need to interrupt operations. This helps to avoid expensive system downtime and keeps maintenance times to a minimum.
Reliable delivery: Our dependable production capacity guarantees on-time deliveries, even for large-scale requirements. Your data centres are rapidly scalable without delay.
Bespoke solutions: You benefit from a team of interdisciplinary experts who will support you with technical advice and develop bespoke solutions tailored to your specific requirements.
Maximum efficiency: For many years, Rittal has been actively involved in OCP projects and has adapted its Direct Liquid Cooling solutions to suit the OCP architecture. We help standardise your data centre structures to save you money and energy.
Direct Liquid Cooling – Modular, platform-based solutions
Flexible scaling and simple integration: Our modular concept and uniform architecture means that solutions are easily adapted to keep pace with your growing requirements and readily integrated into existing infrastructures.
Maximum reliability: Component-based leak monitoring proactively protects your infrastructure from water damage and ensures long-term operational reliability.
Minimal waiting times: The sensors, controller and pumps of the CDU In-Row can be replaced whilst the system is operational. This helps to maintain constant cooling and minimise downtime.
Individual modifications for your infrastructure: Bespoke distributor channels (manifolds) allow flexible, efficient distribution of the cooling fluid.
Reliable power supply: A DC busbar ensures a stable, energy-efficient power supply in data centres based on OCP architecture and protects your IT from power outages.
