Further information about air/air heat exchangers
What is an air/air heat exchanger?
An air/air heat exchanger – also called an air heat exchanger – equalises the temperature between two media. This is achieved by the warmer medium. The advantage of having two separate air circuits is that air/air heat exchangers are suitable for use in aggressive or very dusty environments. This makes them the ideal solution for industry, because the special air circuit arrangement means any dust generated cannot get into the equipment.
How does an air/air heat exchanger work?
An air/air heat exchanger transfers thermal energy captured from the air to another medium, in this case also air. Since the air heat exchanger consists of two separate air circuits, it can be used to recover heat, albeit with an inevitable minimal heat loss.
Air/air heat exchangers are ideal for industrial use. Having a design with two separate air circuits means the incoming air flows past the outgoing air without any contact. The two air flows are separated by a thermally conductive material. This makes air/air heat exchangers particularly suitable for use in very dusty environments.
Further types of air heat exchangers
The cross-flow principle of an air/air heat exchanger makes it a recuperative air heat exchanger. However, there is also another type of heat exchanger.
Regenerative heat exchangers
This type of heat exchanger normally uses a special kind of fan. Unlike conventional fans, this isn’t just able to dissipate air, but can also absorb warm air. The thermal energy is stored on a temporary basis and released again later.
Installation options for air heat exchangers
Our Rittal Online Shop offers two different air/air heat exchanger designs – the wall-mounted TopTherm air/air heat exchanger with controller and the roof-mounted air/air heat exchanger.
Technical specifications
Wall-mounted TopTherm air/air heat exchanger
This product is available in ten different variants from our Online Shop. The specific thermal outputs available range from 17.5 to 90 W/K. Rated voltages of 230 V, 1~, 50 Hz/60 Hz and 115 V, 1~, 50 Hz/60 Hz are available. All units have an operating temperature range of -5 °C to 55 °C.
All product variants for wall mounting are supplied as a complete unit ready for connection. This helps ensure user-friendly installation. The plug-in terminal strip is also included in the scope of supply, along with a floating fault signal contact in case of overtemperature, a drilling template for precise installation, and the necessary fixings.
Roof-mounted air/air heat exchanger
The roof-mounted heat exchanger comes in a standard design with a specific thermal output of 66 W/K and a rated operating voltage of 230 V, 1~, 50 Hz/60 Hz. The operating temperature range for this product is -5 °C to 55 °C.
The scope of supply includes a complete unit ready for connection. The fans are connected using two three-wire connection cables with wire end ferrules. A drilling template and the necessary fixings are also included in the scope of supply.
For precise temperature control inside the enclosure, we recommend the enclosure internal thermostat, the digital enclosure internal temperature display and/or the speed controller.
