Refrigerant switchover

F-gas-compliant refrigerants with a GWP below 150

Refrigerant switchover

F-gas-compliant refrigerants with a GWP below 150

Stricter legislation such as the F-gas Regulation means that industrial companies have now to play a key role in boosting climate protection. The aim is to reduce their carbon footprint. If companies are to remain competitive on global markets, swift action is called for. At Rittal, we completely understand this sense of urgency. That is why we have already converted our entire climate portfolio to the refrigerant R-513A in 2024.

From 1 January 2027, only climate control units with a GWP < 150 may be placed on the market in the EU. That is why we are already converting our Blue e+ portfolio to the F-gas-compliant refrigerant R-1234yf (GWP 0.5).

Our product portfolio for a sustainable future

GWP 0.5

  • Blue e+ S cooling units 0.3–1.0 kW
  • Blue e+ cooling units 1.6–5.5 kW
  • Blue e+ chillers 1.5–7.0 kW
  • Products receive a new item number
  • Availability:
    Cooling units from Q1 2026, chillers from Q2 2026

GWP 631

  • Existing Blue e and Blue e+ portfolio
  • In many regions, such as the USA and China, refrigerants with a higher GWP will continue to be permitted in the future

Exemptions from the GWP limit

  • Products containing R-513A (GWP 631) may be used after 1 January 2027 if the safety requirements at the installation site do not permit the use of refrigerants with a GWP < 150.
  • In this case, the permissible GWP limit for refrigeration equipment is 750.
  • The regulation does not specify a specific limit for chillers.

Good reasons to use refrigerant R-1234yf

R-1234yf offers an ideal balance of safety, environmental friendliness and technical manageability. The refrigerant is not only established worldwide as the standard in modern car air conditioning systems, but has also been used successfully for years in the Japanese market for switch cabinet cooling.

Good reasons to use refrigerant R-513A

lower global warming potential (GWP): Refrigerant R-513A has a much lower GWP value than refrigerant R134a. The GWP value for R134a was 1,430, whereas it is just 631 for R-513A. In the case of our chillers, the GWP value is as much as 70% (from 2,088 for R410a down to 631 for R-513A).

Important to know: The regulations apply to new units only – existing equipment can still be operated and maintained with refrigerants R134a/R410a/R-513A until 2032. From then on, a maintenance and servicing ban will apply to equipment that uses refrigerants with a GWP value over 750.

Did you know that you need to register on the Union’s F-gas Portal (F-gas portal of the European Union) if you want to import and export refrigerants that contain F-gases?

We are there for you!
