Powerhouses made of building blocks
2012-12-12. Support arm systems have proven their worth as an ergonomic link between machine, operating equipment and personnel – but the demands they are subjected to are increasing all the time. The new development of Rittal's support arm range illustrates what has so far been achieved at the man-machine interface. A wide-ranging modular system now offers the user consistency in terms of function, installation and project planning. It comes in one uniform design and covers all the load ranges up to 180 kg that the market calls for.
With support arm systems, control panels can be easily and accurately turned, lifted and swivelled. This way, operators have a good idea of what their machine or system is doing at any time. Nowadays, support arm systems need to be quick to assemble and suitable for individual installations. They must be designed in a uniform way and be capable of bearing high loads. Finally, they need to be simple to adjust and must facilitate cable management. Rittal is meeting all these requirements in full by introducing its support arm system 60/120/180. Thanks to an intelligent modular system that has a consistent design over a wide range of loads, machine and plant constructors now have suitable support arm solutions for every requirement – with the very great savings in time in installation, adjustment and service.
This way, support arm systems can be created for the 60, 120, and 180 kg load levels (relative to a jib length of one metre) with a uniform function, installation and project planning system. The support arm system, consisting of support section, intermediate hinge and angle pieces, can be mounted on top of a machine or on a side panel. Wall and base mountings, as well as flexible top-mounted joints and wall mounted hinges, are available with horizontal outlets for assembly. In addition, system adaptors permit adaptation to the corresponding cross-sections of other support arm sections from the Rittal system, if higher loads need to be withstood, for example.
The support sections are also available as open versions with an X-shaped geometry. This version, in lengths of 500, 1,000 and 2,000 mm, offers the user two separate cable ducts in one section. This allows control cables and power supply to be laid separately from one another, to avoid unwanted electrical couplings. Removable covers on angle pieces, couplings and joints enable easy access. Through the open section, which complies with IP 54 protection category, the user can quickly and easily install cables – even with a DVI or VGA configured connector – at any time.
The fact that already installed support arms can be adjusted with ease or that their rotation range can be limited retrospectively shows just how user-friendly this modular system is designed: no need to dismantle the system. As a result, users can adapt the support arm system to their needs in next to no time, even retrospectively. To do this, they only need to remove the cover plate of the relevant support arm component and can then manipulate the screws with a screwdriver. If they want to limit the rotation range, they can do this just as easily and quickly by adjusting an additional screw inside the rotary turntable.
In future, an interactive online tool will ensure rapid engineering, helping the user configure the appropriate support arm solution.
